Abstract

Necropolitics, Achille Mbembe's concept, can be applied to the Brazilian context, especially within the penal system, which selects, in guidelines permeated by race and gender stereotypes, individuals who will be convicted and imprisoned, with or without trial, in a prison policy full of discussions about the precariousness of life. The central objective of this work is to analyze how the impact of the pandemic within the Brazilian prison system, formally closed by the World Health Organization in 2023, correlates Covid-19 as a "weapon of war" for the genocide of hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of people deprived of their liberty. Finally, this text will indicate the challenges in relation to the production of memory of this historical moment and administrative, civil and criminal accountability in relation to the deaths that occurred in the prison system, as a legacy that we need to discuss in order to recognize and confront necropolitics.
